Best practices for private and SaaS app integration

My team is in planning stages for an application integration center of excellence (CoE) that relates primarily to our SaaS and private cloud systems. We've had a lot of trouble getting SaaS apps and private apps to interact in real-time, which is slowing down business processes, particularly in e-commerce. Could you offer some pointers on best practices for private and SaaS app integration?

Not all platforms are designed the same, so make sure to work with a SaaS/PaaS vendor that has a proven set of real-time APIs. Also, some API’s and middleware solutions are designed only for batch or near batch transactions. Make sure to use solutions that provide open, synchronous APIs and have proven customers examples.
